Civil Unions

Either partner must be a resident of municipality of Basking Ridge, Bernards Township.  This license is good for use anywhere in New Jersey.

If both partners are non-residents of New Jersey, the license must be obtained from the Registrar of the municipality where the ceremony is to be performed and is only good for use in that municipality.

The license fee is $28.00, payable by cash or check. The office hours for application of a civil union license are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Appointments must be made in advance. A witness 18 years or older must accompany the couple at the time of application. The registrar will not issue a civil union license sooner than 72 hours after the application for a civil union license has been made, unless ordered to do so via an appropriate court order. The civil union application MUST be completed by both parties before the license will be issued. Once the civil union license is issued, it is good for 30 days from the date of issuance.

A certified copy of a birth certificate, or valid passport will be requested. If one or both of the applicants are divorced or widowed, you must bring a copy of the final decree(s) or certified death certificate for examination by the Registrar.
