Environmental Health Overview

 

The purpose of the environmental health staff is:

 

1.      To provide for the health and well-being of the residents of Bernards Township and seven contractual municipalities:

 

·         By protecting and promoting proper handling of food in retail food establishments

·         Through the abatement of public health complaints

·         By the enforcement of state codes for recreational bathing facilities, nursery schools, day care facilities

 

2.      To preserve and protect the quality of surface and groundwater supplies through the enforcement of state and local codes for septic systems and wells.

Provide State-mandated services as described below. Follow through with enforcement measures as necessary.

      • License and inspect retail food establishments
      • Conduct food manager training courses
      • Review designs of new food establishments and conduct pre-opening inspections
      • Inspect public recreational bathing facilities and youth camps
      • Review proposed designs for new septic systems, alterations and repairs
      • Inspect the installation and abandonment of septic systems and wells
      • Witness soil logs and soil permeability tests for subdivisions and septic system designs
      • Investigate and oversee the abatement of public health complaints such as garbage, vermin, weeds and septic system malfunctions
      • Conduct environmental risk assessments and provide education in child lead poisoning cases
      • Inspect nursery schools and child day care facilities
